  • 1/4 cup of butter
  • 1 loaf of French bread cut 3/4-inch slices *
  • 1/2 cup of milk or as needed
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup of maple syrup
  • 1/4 cup of molasses
  • 1 teaspoon of cinnamon powder
  • 1 teaspoon of allspice powder
  • 1 teaspoon of ginger powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon of nutmeg powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon of ground clove
  • 1/4 teaspoon of salt
  • 2 tablespoons of sugar powder

  1. Melt the butter in a microwave-safe food and set aside until it cools slightly.
  2. Spray a 9 x 13-inch pan with cooking spray.
  3. Arrange pieces of bread in a baking dish, both flat and tightly fit together, or stand in a corner and slightly overlap if needed.
  4. Beat milk, eggs, maple syrup, molasses, cinnamon, allspice, ginger, nutmeg, cloves and salt together in a bowl. Mix melted butter.
  5. Pour milk and mixed eggs over the bread, changing to make sure the slices are evenly moistened on both sides or using a basting brush to help the bread coat. Cover the plate with aluminum foil and cool it for at least 1 hour or overnight.
  6. When ready to bake, preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
  7. Remove the plate from the refrigerator and uncover, then use brush polish to brush the bread with any excess liquid just before baking.
  8. Bake in the oven until the slices are firm and golden brown, 20-25 minutes. Remove the pan from the oven and leave it for 10 minutes. Dust with powdered sugar and serve with maple syrup.
